چکیده

We investigate the problem of detecting the presence of clandestine neutron sources, such as would be produced by nuclear weapons containing plutonium, within cargo containers. Small, simple and economical semiconductor photodiode detectors affixed to the outsides of containers are capable of producing statistically robust detections of unshielded sources when their output is integrated over the durations of ocean voyages. It is possible to shield such sources with thick layers of neutron-absorbing material, and to minimize the effects of such ab-sorbers on ambient or artificial external neutron fluxes by surrounding them with neutron-reflective material. Terrorist nuclear weapons or special nuclear material may be shipped in cargo containers, and their detection is a matter of serious concern. If the special nuclear material is plutonium then its 240 Pu content is a significant source of spontaneous fission neutrons, depending on the quantity of plutonium and its isotopic composition. These spontaneous fission neutrons may be detectable. In an earlier report 1 we suggested applying 10 B-coated photodiode neutron detectors to the outsides of shipping containers to detect any spontaneous fission neutrons emitted inside. Simple analytic estimates showed that,

A ug 2 00 7 X - Radiography of Cargo Containers

The problem of detecting a nuclear weapon smuggled in an ocean-going cargo container has not been solved, and the detonation of such a device in a large city could produce casualties and property damage exceeding those of September 11, 2001 by orders of magnitude. Any means of detecting such threats must be fast and cheap enough to screen the millions of containers shipped each year, and must b...

Since 2002 the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has been working with the Australian Customs Service to develop a scanner capable of directly imaging airfreight containers in 1-2 minutes [1-4]. The scanner combines fast neutron and gamma-ray radiography (FNGR) to provide high-resolution images that include information on material composition. By collecting trans...

Accelerator-Driven Neutron Source for Cargo Screening

Advanced neutron interrogation systems for screening sea-land cargo containers for shielded special nuclear materials (SNM) require a high-yield neutron source to achieve the desired detection probability, false alarm rate, and throughput. The design of an accelerator-driven neutron source is described that utilizes the D(d,n)He reaction to produce a forward directed beam of up to 8.5 MeV neutr...

Recent Developments in Fast Neutron Radiography for the Interrogation of Air Cargo Containers

There is a growing need to rapidly scan bulk air cargo for contraband such as illicit drugs and explosives. Ideally, cargo containers must be imaged without unpacking and with scan times of less than one minute. Fast neutron techniques are particularly attractive for screening cargo as they can be used to determine cargo composition. The Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation...
